Emoprog Army Radio Hour

Podcast, 10/14/2014

Hosted by @violentfanon, @onekade, and first-time co-host @zlinger. We have on Julia Carrie Wong, a Bay Area freelance journalist who has written for Al Jazeera America, In These Times, and Rolling Stone, among others. She recently went inside Urban Shield, a four-day convention in Oakland, California, where SWAT teams from around the country convene for a trade show and tactical training exercises in the name of fighting terrorism. We discuss her experiences at Urban Shield as well as the implications for police militarization more broadly, and try to disentangle any legitimate public safety benefits of conventions like these from the obvious negative effects of this militarized police culture on black and brown communities.
